Wilbur Niewald of Mission, Kan. spent the late afternoon painting his favorite pine trees in Loose Park on Friday afternoon. Niewald, a professor emeritus at the Kansas City Art Institute, paints outdoors from May to October before heading indoors for the winter with still lifes and figure studies. Niewald paints in the same spot in the park, wearing the grass down to dirt.
